Waneta Expansion Power Corporation, a joint venture between Columbia Power Corporation and the Columbia Basin Trust, is proposing the construction and operation of a new 435-megawatt hydroelectric power plant at the existing Waneta Dam on the Pend d’Oreille River, approximately 400 metres upstream of its confluence with the Columbia River. The new facility would be interconnected with the BC Hydro transmission grid at the Selkirk Substation by a new 10-kilometre, 230-kilovolt transmission line.

The proposed project was also reviewed by the province of British Columbia. The province and the federal government coordinated their respective environmental assessment processes and prepared a joint report.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Transport Canada, the responsible authorities for this project, have submitted the CSR to the federal Minister of the Environment and to the Agency.

After reviewing the CSR and any public comments received, the Minister of the Environment will determine whether to refer the project back to the responsible authority for appropriate action, or whether to refer it for further environmental assessment by a review panel or a mediator.
