Bridge Replacement, Pirate Harbour, NS
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
Pirate Harbour Bridge is located in Pirate Harbour, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia Department of Public Works (NSDPW) is planning the replacement of the existing single-span double-lane timber-bridge of approximately 11 m in length. The Project work is anticipated to begin in May 2023 and completed by December 2024. All work below the ordinary high-water mark, with the exception of removal of the existing bridge and subsequent sheet piling and backfilling in that location, will be completed by end of December 2023, however the material must be left to settle before the project can be completed. During 2024 the new bridge structure will be completed and the existing bridge structure will be removed with an anticipated final project completion date by December 2024. The Project is anticipated to create unavoidable loss of approximately 2,350 sq m of coastal marine habitat.
The 18.7 m span replacement structure will be comprised of cast in place concrete abutments founded on steel H-Piles, precast "NEXT Beam" girders and a cast in place concrete deck. The structure has been designed with two 3.3 m lanes and approximately 1.5 m paved shoulders, which vary across the structure due to the curvature of the alignment. The replacement has been designed with 1.37 m tall steel bridge rails mounted on concrete curbs. All slopes on the approaches to and around the replacement structure will be 2H:1V. The replacement structure will be a single-span two-lane bridge on a new alignment to the east of the existing bridge and is planned to be replaced in 2023. The existing bridge will remain in use until the completion of the new structure, at which time traffic will be rerouted to the replacement structure to facilitate removal of the existing and final stabilization of the slopes at that location.
