Parks Canada Agency Pyramid Bench Fire Guard Prescribed Burn
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
This project will be assessed with a Basic Impact Assessment. Jasper National Park Fire operations is proposing to re-burn the existing Pyramid Bench fire guard, located approximately 600m North-West of the Jasper Townsite. The 36-hectare fire guard was originally constructed in the mid-1980's, and has seen regular re-treatment in 1987, 1995, 2001 and 2003. The guard is divided into four subunits, totalling 3 kilometres in length by approximately 100 metres in width. Maintenance of this fire guard will be accomplished through removal of regenerating conifers and shrubby growth, accumulated grasses, and ladder fuels, using pile burning and low- to moderate intensity surface fire. Areas outside of the guard will be protected with black lines (areas burned prior to the main unit ignition) or wet lines (areas saturated with water), and fire managers will ensure sub-units meet and remain within prescription ranges prior to ignition and during operations, with ignition in one sub-unit at a time to accommodate single operational periods. The project will provide increased wildfire protection for the Jasper Townsite and other facilities through elimination of crown fire potential. It will also provide an operational wildfire suppression access line and fuel break for potential future wildfire and/or prescribed burns. Secondary objectives include public education and engagement regarding the role of fire in maintaining ecological process, landscape level improvements to ecological integrity, and Douglas-Fir savannah ecosystem restoration and maintenance on West, South and East aspects.
