Breakwater Reconstruction, St. Martins, St. John County, New Brunswick

The Small Craft Harbours (SCH) Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada proposes to undertake breakwater upgrades at the St. Martins SCH, St. Martins, St. John County, New Brunswick.

The mouth of St. Martins Harbour is protected by two armourstone breakwaters. The proposed project entails topping up the armourstone by up to 3 m and toeing-in the base of the breakwaters in order to minimize scouring and undermining caused by tidal and wave action.  To accommodate the increase in height of the breakwaters the footprint will also be increased.  The eastern breakwater will be enlarged by 5,046 m2 and the western breakwater increased by 4,446 m2 for a total area of approximately 9,500 m2.  Considering that some settling of armor stone may occur in the substrate surrounding the structure, the footprint may increase from the proposed design by as much as 15%, which could bring the new total increase to 11,000 m2.

No temporary access roads will be required to complete the project.  Project works will require the use of heavy equipment such as excavators and haul trucks.
