Work to secure the walls of the central island of the Lachine Canal

The central island is located in the middle of the Lachine Canal and east of Wellington Street in the Sud-Ouest borough of Montréal. It is constructed from backfill between the Wellington Street Bridge and the railway bridge to divert maritime traffic on either side of the central piers. The walls of the island are the responsibility of InfraMTL, while the island grounds and the bridge are the responsibility of the Parks Canada Agency. Several defects have been observed on the walls of the island (falling debris, erosion, collapse, etc.) and could result in risks for boaters. InfraMTL is in charge of the work, which consists of, but is not limited to, installing tie rods with steel members and replacing the planks. Work will be done from work platforms on either side of the island, from barges or directly from the island. No excavation is required; the soils could be moved and put back in place as soon as the land is levelled.
