Trout Brook Culvert Rehabilitation, Cape Breton Highlands National Park
Trout Brook (also known as Anthony Aucoins Brook) culvert was originally constructed in the 1950s, running beneath the Cabot Trail. The existing pipe has been identified for remediation. As this is a perched culvert, there is lost aquatic connectivity. A major focus of the remediation work will aim to provide aquatic connectivity, accommodate fish passage, and either extend or renew the design life of the culvert. Design options for the new culvert are currently undergoing discussion; however, options currently under consideration include an open bottom arch, or a replacement culvert with baffles/energy dissipation pools etc. to promote fish passage. This project is anticipated to take place in 2021 and will be assessed with a Basic Impact Assessment.
