Acadian Forest Restoration
Project Location: Multiple areas of the Prince Edward Island National Park, mainly forested areas between North Rustico and Cavendish
Objectives:
1) To accelerate the natural collapse of white spruce by implementing selective silviculture techniques (i.e.; patch cuts, strip cuts, crown release, density thinning) in forest stands of PEINP.
2) To ensure Acadian species seed sources are present throughout the Park so that the Acadian forest can persist in the long term.
Scope of Work:
1) Each fall, we will implement silviculture techniques using a skilled chainsaw crew. Trees will be felled with chainsaws, limbed and left on site to promote enhanced soil nutrient cycling. Species targeted for removal include mainly white spruce and balsam fir
2) Cavity (habitat/snag) trees will be left untouched wherever possible (minimum of 12 cavity trees/hectare).
3) Sites where tree removal has occurred, as well as areas that have been heavily impacted by blow down (Hurricane Dorian) will then be replanted by hand using small tree planting spades or dibbles (see Figure 1). Depth of holes to be dug for each tree/shrub will be 6 – 12 inches.
5) Some trees may be guarded from rodent browse using expandable plastic sleeves around the base of the tree and wooden stakes and plastic mesh around the crowns.
