CN rail bridge seismic retrofit project - Public Comments Invited

September 28, 2020 – As part of its Project and Environmental Review process, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority must determine whether the proposed CN rail bridge seismic retrofit project, spanning the Fraser River between New Westminster and Surrey directly upstream of the Pattullo Bridge is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. Written comments to be received by October 28, 2020.

To help inform this determination and a decision on whether or not to approve the proposed project, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public and may be posted online. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website.

The Proposed Project

Canadian National Railway Company (CN) proposes to complete seismic retrofit upgrades to the CN rail bridge located at Mile 118.7 on the Fraser River directly upstream of the Pattullo Bridge. Upgrades will require the installation of ten new 2750 millimetre diameter steel piles. Two piles each will be installed at pier 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.  New piles will be connected to the in-water piers using steel girder collars, pile sleeves and caps. Piles will be driven in welded segments by impact hammer from a temporary construction trestle or barge. The purpose of the project is to strengthen the substructure and foundations for increased seismic capacity.
