News Release
BHP Canada and Tilt Cove Exploration Drilling Projects — Commencement of Environmental Assessments

June 28, 2019 — Ottawa — Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has commenced federal environmental assessments for the proposed BHP Canada Exploration Drilling Project and the Tilt Cove Exploration Drilling Project. The two projects are located between 300 and 325 kilometres east of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, in the Atlantic Ocean.

Following public comment periods on the summary of the project description for each project, the Agency has determined that environmental assessments are required. Information about what aspects of the environment may be affected and what should be examined during the environmental assessments are detailed in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Guidelines for each project. The EIS Guidelines have been provided to the proponents, BHP Petroleum (New Ventures) Corporation and Suncor Energy Inc.

These projects are two of seven exploration drilling projects in the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore area currently undergoing federal environmental assessments.

An application period for participant funding and future public comment period on the summary of the proponent's EIS will be announced at a later date.
