Timiskaming Dam-Bridge of Quebec Replacement Project — Public Comments Invited

June 20, 2018 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has commenced a federal environmental assessment for the proposed Timiskaming Dam-Bridge of Quebec Replacement Project, located on the Ottawa River, at the border between the provinces of Quebec and Ontario.

The Agency invites the public and Indigenous Peoples to comment on which aspects of the environment may be affected by this project and what should be examined during the environmental assessment, as detailed in the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Guidelines.

All comments received will be considered public. Written comments in either official language must be submitted by July 22, 2018 to:

The Proposed Project

Public Services and Procurement Canada is proposing to replace the Quebec Timiskaming dam-bridge located 65 kilometres northeast of North Bay, Ontario, and bordered by the city of Temiscaming, Quebec, to the east. As proposed, the project will result in the replacement of the Quebec Timiskaming dam-bridge, a structure that regulates water without generating electrical power. Its deck supports a two-lane roadway connecting the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. This complex includes two independent dams located on both sides of Long Sault Island on the Ottawa River: the Quebec dam-bridge and the Ontario dam-bridge, which was replaced in 2014. The new structure will be approximately 75 meters long and will have 10 bays: five with vertical sluice gates and five working with wooden beam weirs. The road deck will consist of two traffic lanes as well as a sidewalk. The construction of the new dam-bridge will be spread over a period of 30 months.
