Frontier Oil Sands Mine Project – Public Comment Invited on Additional Information

OTTAWA, November 4, 2013 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency invites the public to comment on the additional information received from the proponent, Teck Resources Ltd., for the environmental assessment of the proposed Frontier Oil Sands Mine Project in northern Alberta.

The additional information was provided in response to the Supplemental Information Requests sent to the proponent in June 2013. This 30-day comment period provides an opportunity for Aboriginal groups, the public and other participants to submit their views in writing to the Agency on whether the additional information submitted by the proponent is satisfactory.  Opportunities to present overall views on the project will be provided at the future public hearing.

The public comments will be reviewed to determine whether further information will be required from the proponent. All comments received by the Agency will be considered public and posted on the online public registry.  Written comments in either official language should be sent by December 4, 2013 to:

The project proposed by Teck Resources would be a new 277 000-barrel-per-day oil sands mining operation located approximately 100 km north of Fort McMurray. The project would be a truck and shovel mine which includes three open pits, ore preparation plants, bitumen processing plants, tailings facilities, cogeneration facilities, support utilities, disposal and storage areas, river water intake, fish habitat compensation lake, roads, airfield, and camp.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
