Participant Funding to Review the Proposed Onshore Sable Gas Project

OTTAWA - November 19, 1996 - The federal government will provide up to $75,000 in participant funding to help the public take part in the joint environmental assessment review of the Onshore Sable Gas Project. Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline Management Ltd. have applied to the National Energy Board and the Nova Scotia Department of the Environment for authorisation regarding the project to transport the natural gas by pipeline through Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to markets in the Maritimes and the United States.

The funding will assist participants to review the environmental aspects of the project application and to prepare for and participate in the panel hearings. The application, prepared by the proponent, describes the project and its potential effects on people and the environment. Funding applications must be received by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency no later than January 3, 1997.

A funding administration committee, independent from the environmental assessment Panel that has been established, will review applications and recommend the allocation of funds to eligible applicants in accordance with published criteria. Successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement with the Agency, under which expenditures may be subject to audit. The Participant Funding Program is administered by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency.
