Course Description

Screenings under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act

Goal

Producing high-quality environmental assessments (EAs) largely depends on using sound principles and methods. This course will help participants to complete a screening that not only meets requirements of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, but also demonstrates good EA practice.

Ideal Participants

  • Individuals involved in planning, managing, conducting, reviewing or participating in screenings under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
  • This course will also benefit those who want to learn how the federal screening assessment process works.

It is recommended that participants have a basic level of knowledge about the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, or have taken the Agency's introductory course, Orientation to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.

Outcomes and Benefits

The course will:

  • deepen participants’ understanding of EA concepts, principles and definitions;
  • prepare participants for managing effective EAs, including: identifying and predicting environmental effects, scoping, involving the public, mitigating environmental effects, evaluating significance and reporting EA findings; and
  • enhance participants’ understanding of EA decision making.

  • engage in a hands-on approach to learning through interactive exercises, short presentations, group discussions, and case-studies; and
  • complete an actual EA in a team setting.
